Design: Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his family created the gates. They finished them in 1982 as his last great creation.
Animals: The iron and steel structures feature silhouettes of 219 different animals. Every animal is native to South Dakota, including past and present species.
Size: The massive gates measure about 46 feet long and stand 8 to 10 feet high.
